JULIE ANDREWS STAR!
Everyone’s favourite Maria and Mary Poppins, Julie Andrews portrayed the life of English theatre and musical star Gertrude Lawrence in the 1968 20th Century Fox film “Star!”
The film has a memorable soundtrack highlighting the days of English vaudeville of which Julie Andrews herself was a part of early in her career.
This World War 1 tan-coloured raw silk military ensemble with a fitted jacket and jodhpur pants was worn by Julie Andrews as she portrayed 'Gertrude Lawrence' in the comedy musical number 'Oh! It's a Lovely War'. Andrews is seen ruining the number for all the other chorus girls. Designer Donald Brooks was nominated for an Academy Award for 'Best Costume Design' for his work in this film.
This is wardrobe costume test from Western Costume Co showing Julie Andrews in costume.
And below is Julie Andrews wearing the costume in the scene from Star!

ReplyDeleteSo nice to hear you are a fan of Star! It is a film favourite of mine as well! Thanks for the nice comments!
ReplyDeleteWhat a terrific website! So great to see so much information and so many rare photos about costumes. "Star!" is one of my favorite movies and I found your site after writing a piece on a gown from "Star!" showing up in the 1975 Raquel Welch film, "The Wild Party".
ReplyDeleteI have a photo record of it on the blog: http://lecinemadreams.blogspot.com/2011/07/wild-party-1975.html
I enjoyed your site so much...may I list it among my favorites on my site?
Hi Ken! Thanks for the nice words on the blog. I have just discovered yours too now! Great stuff!
ReplyDeleteIt is actually amazing how many times costumes were reused in films. For an industry that has a no expense spared mentality, they seem to have wanted to save on costumes a bit! LOL. I have a few pieces myself that have appeared in later films after their initial use.
Thanks again!
