“I am big…it’s the pictures that got small”… Norma Desmond

Sunset Boulevard is undoubtedly a film noir classic and is considered to be one of the most noteworthy films in American cinema history.

Nominated for eleven Academy Awards and winning three, the film was selected for perseveration by the National Film Registry. It has at times ranked in the top 10 films ever made and remains on the American Film Institute's list of the 100 best American films.

“Sunset Boulevard” was released in 1950 by Paramount Pictures. It was directed by the great Billy Wilder.

The film tells the story of Joe Gillis, an unsuccessful screenwriter, played by William Holden who stumbles across the Hollywood mansion home of yesteryear in which Norma Desmond lives. A faded silent movie star, Gloria Swanson plays Norma. The film also stars the legendary director Erich Von Stroheim who plays Max, Desmond’s butler.

Swanson was indeed one of the great stars of the silent era. Swanson worked at Paramount Pictures and with Cecil B DeMille. For a time she was the highest paid star in Hollywood. In that respect she was born to play the role. Some say that the role was based on another silent film star, Norma Talmadge. The similarities however happily end there. The scene in which she appears with DeMille (who plays himself) and meeting Desmond after a long absence is a heart-warming one in terms of their history and careers. DeMille refers to Desmond as “Young Fella” in the scene, a name he lovingly created for Swanson.

Several of Desmond's lines, such as, "All right Mr. DeMille, I'm ready for my close-up," and "I am big, it's the pictures that got small!" are widely remembered and quoted from the film.

The film has also been talked about for its film noir cinematography which is of course dark.

From this film classic is a pink chiffon nightgown was worn by Gloria Swanson.

The gown carries a Paramount costume label bearing Swanson's name sewn inside the front.

The gown features chiffon pin pleats with a bow at the centre of the chest and two ribbon shoulder straps on either side.

Edith Head designed the costumes. In collaboration, Billy Wilder, Edith Head and Swanson agreed that Desmond the character would have kept up to date with trends and styles in fashion, so Edith Head designed costumes closely resembling the Dior look of the mid-1940s.

Edith Head in later years discussed working on the film as being "the most challenging of my career,". The approach she gave to the task was explained as "Because Norma Desmond was an actress who had become lost in her own imagination, I tried to make her look like she was always impersonating someone." Edith Head would also rely on Swanson's expertise as in her words, Swanson was the past that was being recreated and Swanson lived that time.

Edith Head also designed the costumes for William Holden and the minor characters; but for authenticity, Wilder instructed Von Stroheim and Nancy Olson to wear their own clothing.

The costume can be seen in two sequences in the film. The first is Joe Gillis’ first day at the Desmond mansion when he finds his belongings have been moved from his apartment and into her mansion. Norman tells him “he will like it here” and the wonderful line…”Do you want this job or don’t you?”…yes he wanted the job but at what price. The costume comes in at 12.38:

The second scene it is worn in we get to see the more manic, delusional and shall we say psychotic Norma when she believes that her script of Salome is to be made by Paramount and Cecil B DeMille. In the scene she is saying good night to Joe and at the same time accusing him of going out. Joe tells her he hasn’t done anything to which she replies…’of course you haven’t, I wouldn’t let you”. The costume comes in at 1:08:

The theme of the film is best summed up in the closing monologue of Norma..

“I can’t go on with this scene, I’m too happy. Mr. DeMille do you mind if I say a few words? Thank you. I just want to tell you all how happy I am to be back in the studio making a picture again. You don’t know how much I’ve missed all of you. And I promise you I’ll never desert you again because after ‘Salome’ we’ll make another picture and another picture. You see, this is my life. It always will be. There’s nothing else. Just us, the cameras, and those wonderful people out there in the dark!… All right, Mr. DeMille, I’m ready for my close-up.”

Gloria Swanson stood 4' 11½". Her stature and presence on the screen however soared.

Swanson appeared in a few more films after this role however in reality they did not compare. She is also remembered for her cameo appearance in the 1975 film “Airport”.

Gloria Swanson died on April 4, 1983 in New York City at the age of 84.

KATHARINE HEPBURN “Christopher Columbus…..what riches!”

This period blue check wool day dress was worn by Katharine Hepburn in the original and loved 1933 RKO film version of “Little Women”.

Costume were designed by Walter Plunkett.

Everyone who appreciates and loves classic Hollywood has a favourite Katharine Hepburn film. Little known is that Hepburn herself considered this to be one of her personal favorites and is reported to have one said that she defied anyone to be as good as shoe was in the character of Jo. Hepburn considered her personality to be like hers and that part suited what she described as her exaggerated sense of things.

The costume is worn by Hepburn in the scene where she visits on her neighbour Laurie played by Douglass Montgomery. Hepburn utters the much remembered phrase from the film when she sees the mansion which Laurie resides in with his Grandfather and shouts out “Christopher Columbus…..what riches!” She also fences with Laurie in this scene.

The film Little Women tells the Louisa May Alcott novel of sisters Jo, Meg, Beth and Amy March growing in Concord, Massachusetts, during the Civil War.

Hepburn plays the tomboyish Jo, who dreams of becoming a famous author.

The film broke theatre attendance records during its first week and Hepburn won the Best Actress award at the Venice Film Festival,

Directed by George Cukor and made at RKO studios, the film also starred Joan Bennett, Paul Lukas and Francis Dee.

There have been a number of film versions made of this classic novel including the MGM version in 1948 with June Allyson, Elizabeth Taylor and Peter Lawford.

This 1933 version remains a personal favourite.

NINA FOCH A DUTCH BORN AMERICAN IN PARIS

This full length period lavender gown was worn by Nina Foch in the Cecil B. DeMille 1956 epic, The Ten Commandments in which she played Bithia, Pharaoh's sister who found the baby Moses in the bullrushes, adopted him as her son, and joined him and the Hebrews in their Exodus from Egypt.

The costume was worn by Nina Foch in the scene where Charlton Heston as Moses approaches Bithia and confronts her with the Hebrew cloth that Moses was found in an a child.

The costume can be seen in the video below and comes in at 6:20, sorry I could not find an English version on youtube:

The gown is also worn in the next scene where Moses visits his real mother. The costume is worn under a robe for that scene.

Slightly altered from its original use, the clasp to the front was changed for use in another production. Not worked it out yet.

I was lucky enough to also come across the bracelet that is worn by Foch in the scene with the costume and managed to get them back together again. Below is the bracelet.

Costumes for the film were designed by an array of talent available to Paramount at the time including Arnold Friberg, Edith Head, Dorothy Jeakins, John Jensen and Ralph Jester. Added to this are at least 20 more talents that were not credited to the final work. With an epic such as this, the task of costuming not only stars such as Nina Foch, Anne Baxter, Charlton Heston and Yul Brynner but thousands of extras with filming in the US as well as in Egypt.

Dutch born Nina Foch has appeared in many memorable films of the 40’s and 50s including Marie Antoinette in Scaramouche (1952), Executive Suite (1954), starring William Holden, Spartacus (1960) opposite Kirk Douglas and Laurence Olivier and An American In Paris with Gene Kelly in 1951.

Nina Foch spent the last 40 years of her life not only performing however teaching acting and directing at major teaching institutions. Foch was a forty-year member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

Foch was married three times, one time to James Lipton host of Inside the Actors Studio.

Foch died in December 2008, of complications from a blood disorder.

MERLE OBERON QUEENIE TO MY FRIENDS

Indian born Merle Oberon is arguably Hollywood’s first Indian Actress. Born in India, she obscured both her birth lineage which was probably part Eurasian by claiming she was born in the Australian state and Island of Tasmania, a story, which in the last years of her life came to be confirmed as untrue.

The story of her life is itself a plot for a movie and indeed was the basis of the 1987 miniseries “Queenie”. Oberon tried so hard to live the lie of her birthplace that she even visited Tasmania on two occasions throughout her life. The guilt of the untruth finally got to her and she revealed it is understood that it was a falsehood.

That aside, Merle Oberon was a brilliant, vivacious and very appealing screen actress. She has graced the screen in some very memorable roles including that of "Cathy" in Wuthering Heights (1939). Before that she enjoyed a wonderful career in British film in classics such as The Private Life of Henry VIII (1933), and The Scarlet Pimpernel (1934).

Here is a beautiful fur coat worn by Merle Oberon in the film “Lydia” released in 1941 by Alexander Korda Films and distributed through United Artists.

The costume is a full length white fur evening coat with fitted full length sleeves, attached shoulder cape and line hood. Ornamented at the hood, yoke and waistband with silver bullion embroidery in a foliate pattern. The garment is fully lined in white satin.

The film tells the story of Lydia MacMillan, a wealthy old woman who has never married, is invited by an old love to a reunion with the men who have been a part of her life. The film is told in a series of flashbacks as they remember when they were young and chasing Lydia.

The costume appears in a scene where Oberon is riding is a sleigh through the snow and in a scene with her costars Joseph Cotton and George Reeves. Below you can see the scene where the coat appears:

Here also are some close ups showing the intricate silver bullion design to the coat.

The costume came from the famous Western Costume Company and was auctioned as part of the great Western costume sales which took place in 1993.

Oberon’s has director Alexander Korda to thank for her career and indeed when went to herself become Lady Korda in 1942.

Her career continued until the end of the 1940s when it declined to only a few appearances in film. A great shame, as she really is a wonderful actress.

LESLIE CARON THANK HEAVEN FOR LESLIE!

French born actress Leslie Caron is a much loved film actor and dancer who has appeared in some of the most memorable MGM musicals.

Discovered by another MGM performer, Gene Kelly, Caron started life as a dancer. He cast her in the MGM classic An American in Paris (1951). MGM liked what they saw and continued her in a number of musical classics. Lili in 1953 and of course the best being Gigi in 1958.

This wonderful costume was worn by Leslie Caron in the 1958 MGM musical classic “Gigi”. Released in 1958, the film was directed by Vincente Minnelli. Considered as really the last of the great MGM musicals, the film remains a much-loved musical classic.

The costume consists of a white blouse with blue bow detail and a sapphire-blue wool skirt with blue satin piping to the hem. The costume is worn by lead actress Leslie Caron as young Gigi in the musical comedy.

Costumes were designed by the legendary Cecil Beaton who designed for other film classics including My Fair Lady.

The costumes whilst designed by Beaton, were executed by another legendary designer Varvara Jmoudsky, better known as Barbara Karinska.

Karinska was a costumer with the New York City Ballet. For film she won the 1948 Oscar for costume for Joan of Arc.

The costume is worn in a number of scenes in the film including the conformation scene with co-star Louis Jourdan. The film also starred Maurice Chevalier and character actors Hermione Gingold and Isabel Jeans. A young Eva Gabor can also been seen in this film classic.

The costume is also worn by Caron in a number of promotional photos released for the film.

With songs by Lerner and Lowe, the film is set in turn-of-the-20th century Paris and tells the story of high society, marriage, mistresses, lovers and a girl named Gigi.

Gaston a wealthy bachelor, bored with life, takes interest in Gigi in a different way as she slowly become groomed as a courtesan and learns etiquette and charm from her Aunt Alicia. These scenes in themselves are charming and very funny.

Eventually after a few failed attempts he ends up falling in love with a matured Gigi.

Caron has appeared in other much loved film classics including “Daddy Long Legs”, “The Glass Slipper” and “Father Goose”.

Caron has danced with the greats including Gene Kelly, Fred Astaire, Mikhail Baryshnikov, and Rudolf Nureyev.

Caron continues to act and appears on stage film and television.

Gigi is such a loved classic that it has been selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant."

The film is ranked as number 35 in the AFI top 100 films. It’s in the top 10 in mine.

ANNE BAXTER ALL ABOUT ANNE

Anne Baxter was an American actress who has appeared in very memorable and much loved films including All About Eve in 1950 and The Ten Commandments in 1956.

I have three wonderful costumes worn by this film great. All are period pieces and all very different.

Firstly is a period gown worn by Anne Baxter in the 1945 Fox film "A Royal Scandal". In the film, Baxter starred opposite Tallulah Bankhead, Charles Coburn and Vincent Price. Costumes for the film were designed by Rene Hubert. The gown is worn over a very large hoop.

"A Royal Scandal" was directed by the legendary Ernst Lubitsch and then Otto Premigner who took over for him when he became ill. The film is a comedy and is quite entertaining.

The following photo shows Baxter on set in costume between takes. Notice the cigarette in her hand!

Tallulah Bankhead portrays Catherine the Great, and tells the story of her lovers. In the film, Catherine the Great takes a fancy to the fiancée of Countess Anna who is played by Baxter.

Below Anne gets a final check of hair before her next scene.

Anne Baxter was only 22 when she made this film and she is very good in it.

The second costume piece is a period two-piece gray wool suit worn Baxter in Fox film "The Walls of Jericho" released in 1948. The film also starred Cornel Wilde, Linda Darnell and Kirk Douglas. Costumes for the film were designed by Kay Nelson.

Below is a costume test from the film showing Baxter in the costume. The costume has been altered from its original appearance with black velvet added to the sleeves and pockets. The costume has been used for a later production.

The film tells the story of Julia, played by Baxter who returns to her home town of Jericho, with a law degree and her up and down romance with Dave played by Cornel Wilde. They fall in love. She leaves town when she feels she stands in the way of his career in politics and returns to work with him on a trial. The court scenes in the film in which Baxter appears are very good and it is great to witness the very talented Baxter as Counsel.

The third costume piece is a black silk dress with spaghetti straps and floral detail to the bodice, worn by Baxter in the film "The Spoilers".

The film was made in 1955 by Columbia studios. Baxter starred opposite Jeff Chandler and Rory Calhoun. The gowns for the film were designed by Bill Thomas.

This was the fourth and so far, final version of the story which has been made in Hollywood. Baxter’s role having been played by Marlene Dietrich in 1942 prior to this. The film was made in 1932 and originally 1913.

The film tells the story of a lawless western town, claim jumping with a little love in between. The film has some great gun fight scenes and is very funny at times. Baxter as Cherry Malotte is entertaining and looks great in her period western gear. The film ends with a great saloon Fistfight.

Baxter was the niece of architect Frank Lloyd Wright, Baxter was raised in New York City and started her acting career at a very young age.

You can see her in early screen tests for the Hitchcock classic "Rebecca". The role went to Joan Fontaine. Baxter was 16 at the time.

Baxter will be remembered for other memorable roles including that of Eve Harrington in "All About Eve" (1950) and opposite Tyrone Power and Gene Tierney in 1946's "The Razor's Edge", for which she won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. Baxter will also be remembered for her starring opposite Yul Brynner, in the Demille classic "The Ten Commandments". In the film Baxter played the Egyptian Queen Nefretiri opposite Charlton Heston's portrayal of Moses.

In later years Baxter went again to Broadway to star in the musical "Applause". This was the musical version of the film All About Eve. This time however she played the Margo Channing role.

She is also remembered for her television roles including "Columbo" and the television series "Hotel". Baxter also played guest villains on the original "Batman" series.

Baxter was married to at time to actor John Hodiak.

Baxter suffered a brain aneurysm on December 4, 1985 in New York City.

She died 8 days later on December 12, aged 62.

GLADYS SWARTHOUT VOICE OF AN ANGEL

Gladys Swarthout was an American mezzo- soprano opera singer who had a wonderful stage career in operatic roles and recitals and who for time attempted a career in film and radio.

In fact Gladys starred in five films for Paramount pictures including Rose of the Rancho, Romance in the Dark, Give Us This Night and Ambush.

This amazing costume ensemble was designed by the legendary Travis Banton and worn by Gladys Swarhout in the film "Romance in The Dark" (1944).

The gown is comprised of a heavyweight black silk velvet long coat with large skirt train, ¾ length sleeves, front closure, heavy embroidery including beautiful gold bullion threading, faux jewels, seed beads, faux pearls and sequins. The design moves around the sleeve hem, down the center of skirt and lavishly around the hem.

Below are more detailed photos of the amazing embroidery work that went into creating this piece of art. The gown is very heavy. I cannot imagine the hundreds of work hours that went into creating this gown only to be used on screen for 10 minutes.

You can see small details below that Banton factored into his gowns such as the velvet at the neckline to stop the embroidery touching the stars neck.

The gown was later used in publicity photos on actress Mady Correll. The photo below shows the costume in its second appearance. I would like to think it was used again and again.

The costume came from the personal collection of Edith Head who for a time used these costumes in her touring shows on costume in film. The gown was later used by Ms. Head in her fashion shows to represent Dorothy Lamour in Road to Morocco" (1942).

The film, presented as an operetta tells the story of Ilona Boros, a peasant girl with a voice who becomes a pawn in the rivalry between opera tenor Tony Kovach (John Boles) and his business manager Zoltan Jason (John Barrymore).

They are both infatuated with the beautiful, but cold, Countess Foldessy (Claire Dodd), and Tony plans to make Ilona a star so that Jason will be attracted to her instead. The scheme backfires and both men are fighting over Ilona, the outraged countess left to instead pursue Jason's butler, Von Hemisch (Curt Bois).

In between the comedy, Swarthout, Boles, and company perform such well-known selections as "Because," from the opera Jocelyn; "Habanera," from Carmen; "La Ci Darem la Nano," from Don Giovanni; and Ralph Rainger and Leo Robin's "Tonight We Love."

Gladys starred opposite some very big names at the time with John Barrymore and John Boles in the film.

Gladys is the only woman to have sung for the entire assembled Congress of the United States and has also performed for the Diplomatic Corps, Supreme Court and the President on the occasion of the 150th Session of Congress.

In 1956, Gladys was diagnosed with a mitral heart valve problem and eventually underwent open-heart surgery. In retirement she bought a villa in Italy.

Gladys died on July 7, 1969, aged 68, in Florence from the previously diagnosed heart disease.

RICHARD BURTON WELSH ICON GREAT STAR

Here is a wonderful period robe worn by the legendary Richard Burton in the 1956 United Artists picture “Alexander the Great”. Costumes for the film were designed by David Ffolkes.

This full-length light brown woollen robe with powder blue silk lining is adorned with embroidered aqua sunbursts and depictions of lions.

He originally worked on the stage and in cinema while in the United Kingdom.

He will be remembered for his roles in the film Cleopatra (1963) opposite Elizabeth Taylor and where they first met. Other films together included The VIPs and Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? Other memorable film appearances include My Cousin Rachel opposite Olivia de Havilland and The Robe with Jean Simmons.

Burton had great critical success both on stage and in film.

Burton was nominated seven times for an Acadamy Award, six for best actor. He never won. He will be remembered also for the very public romance and twice marriage to Elizabeth Taylor.

Burton was married five times and he had four children.

Burton died suddenly at the age of 58 from a brain haemorrhage. He was plagued with illness issues for most of his life. At one time he was highest paid actor in Hollywood.

He will always be remembered as one of the greatest.

ROBERT TAYLOR THE MAN WITH THE PERFECT PROFILE

This navy jacket with military braiding and buttons was worn by Robert Taylor in the 1936 MGM film “The Gorgeous Hussy”. Directed by Clarence Brown, the film also starred Joan Crawford.

The film tells the story of President of the United States Andrew Jackson and an innkeeper's daughter.

This was considered quite a lavish production and particularly in terms of the number of leading men given to Joan Crawford for the film, including Franchot Tone, Melvyn Douglas and James Stewart.

The Gorgeous Hussy earned two 1936 Oscar nominations for Best Cinematography and Supporting Actress Beulah Bondi as the First Lady. It is also remembered for being the only sound era appearance of Joan Crawford in a costume period film.

The following photo provides more detail of the military braiding and buttons.

Lionel Barrymore appears as Andrew Jackson and would reprise his role in 1952's Lone Star, with Clark Gable and Ava Gardner. Sadly that would be his final screen performance.

Taylor was famous for having appeared in many MGM and other studio classics including Camille opposite Greta Garbo and Waterloo Bridge opposite Vivien Leigh. One of my favourites is his appearance as General Marcus Vinicius in Quo Vadis, opposite Deborah Kerr.

Robert Taylor can be seen wearing the jacket in various scenes throughout the film. Below is a scene the costume appears in opposite Joan Crawford:

At one time Taylor was married to actress Barbara Stanwyck. Taylor died of illness in 1969 at the age of 57.

JUDY HOLLIDAY NOT BORN YESTERDAY!

Here is a beautiful 1940’s dress worn by Judy Holliday in the 1949 MGM film classic “Adam’s Rib”.

The film was written by Ruth Gordon and Garson Kanin and directed by George Cukor. It starred Spencer Tracy and Katharine Hepburn. This was Judy Holliday in her first major film role. The film is considered one of the great classic romantic comedies of the 1940’s.

The film was used by Columbia as her audition for re-creating her role on film of her Broadway success in Born Yesterday. Holliday went on to win the Academy Award for Best Actress for Born Yesterday.

Holliday is also best remembered for her role in Bells Are Ringing which she also performed on Broadway and then reprised her role on film. Holliday also starred in the film ‘The Solid Gold Cadillac”.

Holliday passed away from illness in June 1956 far too young at age 43.

JUDY GARLAND THE HARVEY GIRLS

Here is a wonderful wedding gown worn by Judy Garland in the much-loved 1946 MGM musical classic “The Harvey Girls”. The gown is a creme-colored (Hollywood white) silk wedding gown with ornate puffy shoulders, lace sleeves and lace trim on the front.

A handwritten cloth label sewn into the zipper lining reads “1348-9123 Judy Garland”

Garland played Susan Bradley in this film classic that tells the story of a mail order bride who makes her way out west under a mistaken offer of marriage and instead joins a group of young women who are opening a Harvey House in the wild west.

The gown can be seen in two scenes in the film.

The first time it appears is when Garland, lets the Harvey girls know that she is to be married and showing the girls her wedding gown. This scene takes place on the famous Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe.

The gown then appears in the wonderful closing number to the film when Garland finally marries her love, John Hodiak.

Here is a close up of the bodice showing the intricate lace work on the gown.

The gown also appears in the poster art which was used to market the film.

The gown was originally one of the many MGM treasures that appeared in the "Star Wardrobe" portion of the great MGM auction in the 1970's.

Costumes for the film were designed by Helen Rose.

The film also starred some other MGM greats including Angela Lansbury, Cyd Charisse and Marjorie Maine.

Garland was also reunited with her Wizard of Oz yellow brick road partner, Ray Bolger and enjoyed some memorable scenes together.

The most famous of which would have to be the big, eight minute production number "On The Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe."

Men’s costumes were designed by Valles for the film.

Also from The Harvey Girls is a nightgown worn by Marjorie Main in a scene where the Harvey Girls are woken up by a bullet hitting a light fitting in order to scare the girls into leaving town. Marjorie Main was a much loved character actress best remembered for her role as Ma Kettle in the Ma and Pa Kettle series.

JANE GREER FEMME FATALE

Jane Greer was a film actress who despite making less than 30 films in her career, is remembered for roles in film noir classics and for playing the femme fatale.

The most important of her films are considered to be "Out of the Past" for RKO in 1947, "The Big Steal" in 1949 also with RKO and the "The Prisoner of Zenda" in 1952.

It is a little known fact that Greer suffered from facial palsy as a child and that as result, utilised the expressionless face 'look'in
later years. It has been mentioned that this 'look' is what she became known for in her films. Greer has been referreed to as the woman with the Mona Lisa smile.

The two costume pieces here are worn by Jane Greer in two of her more popular roles.

The first piece is a simple nightgown consisting of a gray cotton fabric with lace design to the neck line and sleeves that was worn in possibly her most memorable film noir roles in Out of the Past for RKO in 1947. Out of the Past was directed by Jacques Tourneur and starred Robert Mitchum, Jane Greer, and Kirk Douglas. The film is considered by film historians to be one of if not the best film noir with its complex storyline, flashbacks and cinematography.

Costumes for the film were designed by Edward Stevenson.

This second costume is a wonderful two piece red velvet period gown with lace bodie and trim worn by Greer in the 1952 MGM classic "The Prisoner of Zenda" Costumes for the film were designed by Walter Plunkett who designed for film classics including Gone With The Wind.

The film tells the story of an Englishman vacationing in a Ruritarian kingdom and who is asked to impersonate the soon-to-be-crowned king when the real king to be is drugged and kidnapped.

The film also starred Stewart Granger and Deborah Kerr and was a remake of the 1934 classic with In later years, Greer took on many television roles including Alfred Hitchcock Presents and Murder, She Wrote.

Greer died at the age of 76 in 2001.

DOUGLAS FAIRBANKS HOLLYWOOD ROYALTY

Douglas Fairbanks, Sr is considered to be one of the earliest of the film greats and has on many occasions been referred to as The King of Hollywood. This was until Mr Gable came along to usurp his throne. He is remembered best for his swashbuckling roles in early silent films as well as being a prolific director and producer.

He will also be remembered for his role as founder of a major studio, United Artists as well as the Motion Picture Academy.

Married at one time to another Hollywood great, Mary Pickford, they lived together as Hollywood royalty in the famous estate known as "Pickfair". They married in 1920 and separated in 1933. They had a son that grew up to be another famous actor in his own right, Douglas Fairbanks Jr.

Douglas Fairbanks appeared in some very memorable films of the silent era including Robin Hood (1922), The Three Musketeers (1921), The Thief of Bagdad (1924), The Black Pirate (1926), and The Gaucho (1927). His stamina, strength and death defying stunts on screen established him as one of the great swashbucklers of the early screen.

This costume piece was worn by Fairbanks in the film “The Private Life of Don Juan” (1934). Produced by Alexander Korda, this was to be his final film appearance.

The costume consists of two pieces being a royal blue velvet jacket and pants. The jacket features wide satin lapels with intricate design including tassels and buttons, which can also be found on the trousers. Costumes were designed by Oliver Messel. Messel, a designer predominanty for the stage, is also rememeber for his designs in the MGM classic “Romeo and Juliet” with Norma Shearer and Leslie Howard.

The Private Life of Don Juan is a British comedy-drama film about the life of an aging Don Juan. The film also starred Merle Oberon.

At the age of 56 in 1939 Fairbanks suffered a heart attack in his sleep and died shortly thereafter.

GRETA GARBO THE ULTIMATE STAR

She was born Greta Lovisa Gustafsson. To the screen loving public however she was simply known as GARBO.

A major star of the silent era and the MGM period of the 1930's and early 40's, Garbo gained her popularity not only for her screen perona but also for her private life and elusivenss. In later years Garbo wanted to be left alone. The public refused to do so.

This beautiful piece is a scarf worn by Greta Garbo in the 1937 MGM costume drama "Conquest". The film was also known by another title of Marie Walenska, the character played by Garbo.

The scarf measures a huge 40x90" and is a three line gold trim vintage silk with fleur de lis design and satin fringe pattern throughout.

Conquest tells the story of a polish countess played by Garbo who becomes Napoleon Bonaparte's mistress and who feels that she may influence him to make Poland an independent State.

The costumes were designed by the legendary Adrian who designed for many of the MGM great stars in the 1930's and 40's including Joan Crawford, Norma Shearer, Lana Turner, Judy Garland, Jeanette MacDonald, Jean Harlow and Katharine Hepburn.

Adrian worked with Garbo throughout the course of her career. As with Garbo, Adrian Adolph Greenberg was simply addressed on screen and in any publications with the phrase "Gowns by Adrian".

Garbo made the transition from silent film to sound well. The studio waited for the best vehicle for her to do this which came along in the form of Anna Christie in 1930. The phrase "Garbo Talks" was one well known to the movie audiences of 1930 who could not wait to hear what she would sound like. They approved.

Garbo has appeared in many memorable film classics including Anna Karenina (1935), and as the courtesan Marguerite Gautier in Camille (1936). Garbo turned to comedy in the 1939 classic, Ninotchka (1939) and Two-Faced Woman (1941) her final film. Garbo retired to her New York appartment. She was a prolific traveller however and to her circle of trusted friends continued her social life.

Up until the end of her life, Garbo sighting in New York was considered a great thrill to the fans who remembered her and her works. To the media, she was another chance at an exclusive photo of the ageing star.

Various attempts to return to film took place over the years but it was never meant to be.

Garbo was reported to have attended a film festival of her films in the 80's in disguise to see her performance on the screen. In the seventies when the Metropolitan Museum of Art conducted a retrospective of film costume under the eye of Diane Vreeland, Garbo costumes were on display.

A private viewing before the public opening was requested by Garbo who attended one morning to view the costumes including some she wore in films like Camille and Anna Karenina. Garbo is reported to have touched the pieces like she was saying hello to an old friend and remembering the magic of what was. Garbo did for a time enjoy what she did, being an actress and being the best she could be on film. The camera loved her face, the audience loved what they saw. It was a match made in the movies!

Garbo died in 1990 at the age of 84.

JENNIFER JONES IS A MANY SPLENDORED THING

SONG OF BERNADETTE

Here is a very special item that I was recently lucky to acquire. It is a Jennifer Jones headdress worn in "The Song of Bernadette" made at Fox
studios in 1943 and directed by Henry King.

The headdress is made of beige wool with a simple red threaded trim. It is worn by Jones as "Bernadette" when she first sees the Virgin Mary and then seen throughout remainder of film. Costumes were designed by Sam Benson.

The Song of Bernadette tells the story of Saint Bernadette Soubirous, who, from February to July 1858 in Lourdes, France, reported 18 visions of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

The costume piece can be seen in many scenes in the film.

It also appears on the poster art for the film and was used in the famous Norman Rockwell painting of the same name.

I was also lucky enough to obtain a Jennifer Jones Golden Globe nomination certificate for "The Song of Bernadette," 1943. Presented to the star by the Hollywood Foreign Correspondents Association; reading in part "First Annual Award for the Best Performance of 1943 By an Actress
Miss Jennifer Jones A 20th Century Fox Production. This was the first year for the Golden Globes and Jones did win in her category.

Jennifer Jones has appeared in many memorable films including "Love Is a Many-Splendored Thing" (1955) and Duel in the Sun (1946).

Other notable films included Since You Went Away (1944), Madame Bovary (1949), Carrie (1952), Ruby Gentry (1952), Beat the Devil (1953),Good Morning Miss Dove (1955), and The Towering Inferno (1974).

Jennifer Jones was also married to actor Robert Walker and to producer David O. Selznick.

ORSON WELLES DIRECTOR ACTOR SCREEWRITER PRODUCER

Orson Welles did it all. He worked in the mediums film, theatre, television and radio and sustained fame and success in each.

His voice was perfect for radio and his personality for his film roles. He was larger than life and his aristic views and temperament was often at odds with established Hollywood. His work was unique, it had a distinct Welles mark that has not been repeated since. He was indeed one of the most influentual persons of the 20th Century in terms of his contribution to the arts.

He will be best remembered for his film classic "Citizen Kane" which he made at RKO in 1941. The film is always rated as the top ten films of all times and if you have seen it, you will know why. He will also be remembered for his radio play broadcast of "War of the Worlds" whose aliens attacking planet earth was thought by many listening in as a real event and caused much panic in many cities throughout the US.

This costume piece was worn by Orson Welles in his 1943 performance as Edward Rochester in "Jane Eyre" at 20th Century Fox studios. Costumes were designed by Rene Hubert.

This red velvet single breast period smoking jacket with frog closure is worb by Wellles in two scenes in the film opposite Joan Fontaine and Jane. Velvet cuffs and collar have been added to the costume for re use in another production. As was the case, costumes were sometimes altered an reused. Here the alterations were luckily minimal. Some of Welles costumes for Jane Eyre were for example used by Rex Harrison a few years later in "Foxes of Harrow" in 1947. You never know where a costume is going to end up. It is interesting to note for Jane Eyre that Welles gave up having his name above the title and above Joan Fontaine's in lieu of acting as associate producer. In many ways, Welles found the business of film as important if not more, than the craft itself.

Welles personal life was as interesting as work. He married Rita Hayworth in 1943 and had one child together. He had also fallen in love with Mexican actress Dolores del Río and also elpoped with Chicago-born actress and socialite Virginia Nicolson. In 1955 he married Italian actress and Countess Paola Mori.

This bigger than life personalily has indeed earnt his place and postion on the bigger than life screen! I am very lucky to have a costume piece worn by this genius.

CARY GRANT CLASSIC STYLE

Born Archibald Alexander Leach, Cary Grant has always been known for his distinctive voice and good looks. He will always be remembered as the debonair leading man with not only charm but great style.

Cary Grant has appeared in many film classics including To Catch A Thief in 1955 with Grace Kelly and An Affair to Remember in 1957 with Deborah Kerr, a personal favourite of mine. Other classics include The Awful Truth in 1937 and Bringing Up Baby in 1938.

He is fondly remembered playing opposite Katharine Hepburn in The Philadelphia Story at MGM in 1940 and in Hitchcock's Suspicion in 1941.

He worked well in comedies with his great comedic timing and facial expressions none more so than in Arsenic and Old Lace in 1944 when discovering his two lovelable Aunts to be cold blooded killers.

This two piece blue velvet period costume was designed by Irene Saltern and worn by Cary Grant in the 1940 Columbia Pictures feature film "The Howards of Virginia". The film tells the story of the American revolutionary war as seen through the eyes of Cary Grant. Grant portrays Matt Howard with Martha Scott starring as his wife Jane Peyton Howard.

The colour of a costume even in the black and white film was considered important. It not only sought to provide authenticity to the actors in performing their roles, it was also important that a costume photograph well.

The dark blue velvet of this piece can clearly be seen in its black and white setting altough we don't know what colour it is, we know it is velvet and that it is not black. It is interesting to watch films that have been through a coloursitaion process and to see what colour cosutmes were considred as correct. Most times they are wrong. The magnificent blue of this costume would have been lost to the paying audiences of 1940. Perhaps ten years later the film would have been made in colour. It is nice now to be able to see what the cosutme looked like in all its beauty!

Cary Grant remained as one of the top box-office attractions for 30 years. When you watch his films, you can see why. Even Mr Grant put it best himself when he said "Everyone wants to be Cary Grant-even I want to be Cary Grant".

MITZI GAYNOR THE I DON'T CARE GIRL

Mitzi Gaynor is a much loved musical film, theatre and television performer. She has beautifully acted and danced in a number of film musical classics including my favourites of "There's No Business Like Show Business" in 1954 with Ethel Merman and Marilyn Monroe.

Another one of her film classics is "Les Girls" in which she appeared in 1957 at MGM studios. Directed by George Cukor and starring Gene Kelly and Kay Kendall, it remains up there as one of the great MGM musicals.

This costume appears in Les Girls as worn by Mitzi Gaynor. It is a peach coloured dance leotard with intricate beading and design to the majority of the costume. The costumes for the film was designed by Orry-Kelly.

To give you an idea of size, her measurements in 1956 around the time of filming "Les Girls" was 36C-21 1/2-36 1/2. The following photos give you clear understanding of the "waists" these performers had!

The costume design is worn by all three leads inluding Kay Kendall and Tania Elg as part of a dance number in the film with Gene Kelly. It's a wonderful dance cosutme and so reminicent of the magic of the MGM musical film and the glamour of 1950's Hollywood.

Gaynor will of course be rememebered best for role as Ensign Nellie Forbush in the film version of Rodgers and Hammerstein's "South Pacific" and for her performance she was nominated for a Golden Globe Award for best actress.

Following her career as a film performer, she went on to perform on stage in a number of concert appearances as well as a series of much loved televsion specials so much so that they gained her a total of 16 Emmy nominations.

This great lady even today continues to tour with her one one-woman show titled "Razzle Dazzle: My Life Behind the Sequins".

LANA TURNER GLAMOUR GIRL

I was recently lucky enough to find this wonderful period costume as worn by Lana Turner in the MGM film “Diane” (1956). This second Lana Turner costume I am thrilled to have from this MGM film was designed by Walter Plunkett.

From the Bill Madigan Collection.

Lana Turner portrayed Diane de Poitiers, the Countess de Breze opposite a very young Roger Moore.

The costume is a two-piece period gown of metallic fabric with long train and with heavy lace trim to the arms. The gown also features an ornate design to the bodice and arms.

Lana Turner wears this gown in a scene where she is teaching Roger Moore how to dance. You can see Ms Turner wearing the costume in this clip and it comes in at 4:22:

COLLECTORS WHO COME INTO YOUR LIFE

Over the coming few weeks I will be listing some amazing treasures that I recently purchased from a wonderful man with an equally wonderful family. He was also a remarkable collector of entertainment memorabilia.

It is to the collectors of yesterday who the collectors of today owe a great deal. If it weren’t for them, the majority of these treasures would no longer exist. The sad reality is that these treasures will one day be no more. Fabrics and textiles will eventually deteriorate and disappear. Mabye not in our lifetime or the next, but eventually. Until then each collector does his or her bit to preserve and conserve until it is time to pass on to the next collector.

One such collector was Bill Madigan. I only had the pleasure of meeting and chatting for a very short time but it is something I will always remember. The way he talked about costumes and collecting is the way I always feel. It is something common to collectors and when you come upon it, you recognise it right away. He was not only a collector but he got great joy in displaying his treasures for the public to enjoy. This is what it is all about. Not only collecting but also being able to show them to those who appreciate the magic of film costume.

Below is an newspaper article from the mid eighties highlighting Mr Madigan and his collection.

Mr Madigan sadly passed away in May of 2010. His family continues the tradition of displaying many of the pieces that they have kept.

To Mr Madigan and his family, I say thank you for the genuine thrill you have given me in allowing me to have purchased and add these treasures to my collection.

I have always felt that you give credit where credit is due. To this end, the costumes, which I was lucky enough to purchase from this wonderful collector, will note that at the bottom. Its my small way of saying thanks and to keep alive the spirit of the collector.

GLORIA GRAHAME QUEEN OF THE NOIR

Grahame was a wonderful actress who worked both in film and theatre. Beginning her career at MGM, she was later moved to RKO where she appeared in various film noir classics. In fact she received a nomination for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for Crossfire (1947) for one such role.

Grahame made her film debut in Blonde Fever (1944). Grahame also starred with Humphrey Bogart in the 1950 film “In a Lonely Place”, a favourite of mine. I also think she was great in “The Man Who Never Was”.

Here is a wonderful circus costume worn by Gloria Grahame in the film “The Greatest Show on Earth” which was another Cecil B. DeMille epic focusing on the lives of circus people in times of both financial and personal hardships.

The red performance outfit with gold lame inserts is highlighted by faux pearls and beading. Gloria Grahame portrays the elephant girl who attracts the unwanted attentions of Lyle Bettger who plays an elephant trainer but secretly pines for Charlton Heston. Costumes were designed by Edith Head and Dorothy Jeakins and Miles White undertaking the circus costumes.

The costume is worn in a great scene involving Grahame and an elephant threatening to crush her. You can see the costume being used in the following video. You can see the costume come in at just over a minute.

The film was nominated and won the Best Picture Oscar for 1952.

Grahame actually won an Oscar for her role in The Bad and the Beautiful (1952).

Sadly Grahame became ill with stomach cancer and refusing to accept that she was ill and receive treatment, she passed away in 1981 following complications.

And yes she did marry her own stepson.

GINGER ROGERS SHALL WE DANCE?

Ginger Rogers will always be remembered as one of the true dancing legends of all time and more so as being half of the partnership that will always be considered the most memorable on screen dance partnership of Astaire and Rogers. They danced well together with elegance and style. And as they said, Ginger did everything Fred did on screen…but she had to do it backwards!

Rogers has appeared in many memorable film classics including “Top Hat”,” “Shall We Dance”, “ Black Widow”, “The Barkley’s of Broadway”, “Roxie Hart” and “I'll Be Seeing You”.

This first costume is a two-piece single-breasted brown suit with a cream blouse worn by Ginger Rogers in the 1944 Paramount film “Lady In The Dark”. The film is an adaption of the Kurt Weill stage musical of the same name. Rogers plays Liza Elliott, an unhappy female editor of a fashion magazine, “Allure”, who is undergoing psychoanalysis.

The second costume is a two-piece period gown worn in Rogers last RKO film, “The First Travelling Saleslady” RKO 1956. Edward Stevenson designed the costumes.

The film tells the story of turn of the century Rogers and ex-showbiz friend, Carol Channing who become involved as female steel sellers. When they find themselves unsuccessful selling corsets, they turn to selling barbed wire to Texas cowboys.

Miss Rogers also appeared on Broadway and on the London stage in shows such as “Hello Dolly” and “Mame”.

MARTHA RAYE THE BIG MOUTH

Martha Raye was a much-loved comic actress and singer who performed in movies as well as television in her later years.

A singer in big bands, Raye also travelled during World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War to entertain American troops.

Here is a wonderful complete matador costume worn by Martha Raye in the 1938 Paramount comedy ‘Tropic Holiday”. This four piece costume consists of a a bolero style jacket of black silk velvet having silver bullion epaulets and heavily ornamented with silver sequins and silver bullion balls. The costume comes with matching knicker pants of heavily embroidered velvet, a cotton dickie with small self-collar and front ruffle trimmed with silver bullion. A bull’s ears hat having black silk crocheted balls and black piping completes the costume.

Raye wears this costume in a funny sequence in which she masquerades as a bullfighter and is forced to defend herself against a vicious bull.

Edith Head designed the costumes for the film.

The costume also appears in many production stills for the film’s release including various costumes poses as seen below.

Raye had her own television program in the 50’s with The Martha Raye Show.
In her final years she was remembered for her ongoing role on the CBS sitcom comedy “Alice” as Mel Sharples' mother, Carrie.

She was married seven times.

DOROTHY LAMOUR THE SARONG GIRL

Dorothy Lamour was an American film actress who is best remembered for her performances in the series of “Road to..” films opposite Bing Crosby and Bob Hope.

Dorothy Lamour is also remembered for her many films in which she wore the characteristic sarong dress, which was deigned for her by the legendary Edith Head during her years at Paramount pictures. Lamour first appeared in the sarong in the 1936 Paramount film “The Jungle Princess”. In fact she appeared in 11 films thereafter in Sarong. Audiences remember Lamour best for these films.

During the World War II years, Lamour remained amongst the most popular pinup girls including Betty Grable, Rita Hayworth, Lana Turner and Veronica Lake. Lamour was also heavily involved in the creation of war bond tours in which movie stars travelled the country selling U.S. government bonds.

Here is an elegant black satin halter gown worn by Dorothy Lamour in the film Masquerade In Mexico (1945). Costumes designed by Edith Head. The gown features intricate lace design to the bodice and trim to the hem. The film tells the story of an American singer stranded in Mexico who is hired by a banker to distract a Mexican matador who is making a play for the banker's wife. They hatch a scheme whereby she pretends to be a Spanish countess.

The costume appears in many production stills made for the film and for Paramount advertising. The costume also appears on the poster advertising for the film.

A wonderful Edith Head creation for one of Paramount’s biggest box office draws of the 1930’s and 1940’s.

JEANETTE MACDONALD SINGING SWEETHEART

Jeanette MacDonald will always be remembered as the American operatic singer and actress and more so for her appearances in MGM musical films of the 1930s and 1940’s with MGM co-star, Nelson Eddy.

Some of her much loved films include “The Merry Widow” in 1934 with Maurice Chevalier, “Naughty Marietta” in 1935 and “Rose-Marie” in 1936.

MacDonald gave a exceptional performance opposite Clark Gable and Spencer Tracy in the 1936 MGM film “San Francisco” which told the story of the 1906 San Francisco earthquake.

My personal favourite is the 1937 film “Maytime” which co-starred Nelson Eddy.

This incredible concert gown was worn by Jeanette MaDonald in the 1949 MGM film “The Sun Comes Up”. Costumes for the film were designed by Irene. This was also to be MacDonald’s last film appearance. The film teamed MacDonald with Lassie, in an adaptation of a short story by Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings. MacDonald played a widow who has also lost her son, but warms to orphan Claude Jarman Jr.

The gown is made of beige chiffon with heavily jewelled bodice and waist of silver bugle beads and pearls. The waist ornamentation is held in place with two finely crafted clasps of the same design.

MacDonald also performed live in concerts from 1931 through to 1950s.

This gown was worn also worn by her at a Hollywood Bowl concert in the late 40’s. Here is a photo of MacDonald in the gown in concert.

And here you will see MacDonald wearing the gown in the film, The Sun Comes Up and in which she sang, “UN BEL DI" from Puccini's Madame Butterfly.

The costume also features in advertising for the film. MacDonald thought so highly of the costume as a piece of her MGM history that she cherished and indeed enjoyed wearing the gown in concerts well after her film career had come to an end.

A wonderful costume piece worn by an Operatic singing legend in the last of her film performances.

CYD CHARISSE DANCING LEGEND

Cyd Charisse will always be remembered as the female icon of the American film dance musical.

She will be remembered most for her appearances in films opposite Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly including “Singin' in the Rain” in 1952 and “The Band Wagon’ in 1953. Other classic appearances were in the 1953 musical “Silk Stockings’.

This beautiful gown was worn by Cyd Charisse in the 1948 MGM musical “On an Island With You”. This elegant cream-colored full-length gown, gathered at the hips with fitted short sleeve top in green and gold sequin geometric pattern.

On an Island with You is a 1948 musical romantic comedy film directed by Richard Thorpe. It stars Esther Williams, Peter Lawford, Ricardo Montalbán, Cyd Charisse and Kathryn Beaumont. Williams stars as a swimming movie star who goes to Hawaii to make a film, bringing her fiancé, Ricardo Montez, played by Montalbán, with her. Lawford stars as Lawrence Kingsley, a military technical advisor for Reynolds's film, who eventually falls in love with her. Charrise plays Reynolds's best friend and fellow movie star, Yvonne Torro, who secretly wants Ricardo for herself.

Charisse was meant to perform dance numbers in the film however injured herself prior to filming and was forced to do most scenes sitting. This gown appears in a nightclub scene.

Costumes were designed by Irene.

SUSAN HAYWARD FIRERY RED HEAD

The one word, which can be used to describe this amazing actress, is survivor. Starting her career as a fashion model, Hayward later travelled to Hollywood. Susan Hayward has performed in some very memorable films.

The first gown is a floor length sequined gown with matching scarf worn by Susan Hayward in the 1947 Universal film “Smash-Up: Story of a Woman”. The gowns for Susan Hayward were designed by the legendary Travis Banton who also designed for such film greats as Marlene Dietrich and Mae West.

The gown is worn by Hayward as nightclub singer Angie Evans and her problems with alcoholism. The gown is worn in a party scene in which Hayward begins the evening glamorous and sober and descends into a drunken catfight with co star Marsha Hunt. The gown is worn by Hayward during the fight.

Hayward achieved recognition for her dramatic abilities with the first of five Academy Award nominations for Best Actress that year.

The next gown was worn by Hayward in the 1952 biographical film of singer Jane Froman “With A Song In My Heart”.

The film was made at 20th Century Fox Studios. The film tells the story of the turbulent life of the great singer and entertainer.

The gown consists of a black silk bodice with layers of black tulle forming the skirt. Long see through sleeves complete the costume. Hayward can be seen wearing the costume in a nightclub scene with co star David Wayne.

There is a tradition in Hollywood when it comes to film costumes and props, which is to reuse. The sad realisation for many film costumes is that they no longer exist due to many costume pieces having been cut, changed, even dyed a different color for reuse in later productions. Whilst this costume remained relatively unchanged, it appeared again in another Fox film in 1956 being “The Man In The Gray Flannel Suit”. Actress Ann Harding wore the costume in the film with the Peter Pan collar removed. Harding starred opposite Fredric March in the film.

Costumes were designed for Susan Hayward by Charles Le Maire. Hayward was also nominated for best actress that year for her portrayal.

The final piece is worn by Hayward in the historical retelling of the life of President Andrew Jackson. The film was called “The President’s Lady” and was made by 20th Century Fox studios in 1953. Hayward portrayed the wife of President Jackson who was played by Charlton Heston.

Hayward died at age 57 on March 14, 1975, of pneumonia-related complications of brain cancer. There has always been speculation that she was exposed to radioactive fallout from atomic bomb tests while making “The Conqueror” with John Wayne.

JOAN BENNETT GLAMOUR GIRL

This wonderful tan velvet and lace heavily beaded period gown was worn by actress Joan Bennett in the 1939 version of the Alexandre Dumas classic “The Man In The Iron Mask”. Bennett portrays the character of Princess Maria Theresa. The film was directed by James Whale who is best known for his direction of film horror classics such as “Frankenstein” and “The Invisible Man”.

William Bridgehouse designed costumes for the film. The film was made at United Artists studios.

This famous costume adventure tells the story of a twin brother of Louis XV kept hidden away in a prison and forced to wear an iron mask to hide his identity. This was the second of five screen versions.

Louis Hayward co-starred with Bennett in the dual roles of Louis and his brother.

Make up for the film was executed by the Max Factor studio. It was not uncommon for make up tests to be conducted together with costume tests for the film. Below is Joan Bennett in costume for her make up test for the film.

Esther Williams is best remembered for her swimming films at MGM. Williams however was also a competitive swimmer winning national records.

Williams is best remembered for her series of water musicals of the 1940s and
1950s. Some of her most memorable films at MGM include “Million Dollar Mermaid” and “Dangerous When Wet”.

Here is a wonderful Esther Williams outfit worn by her in the” Duchess of Idaho” MGM 1950. The one-piece jumper is made of beige-colored raw silk with a netted waist. Williams wears this item whilst playing tennis with co-star Van Johnson. The wonderful Helen Rose designed the costumes for the film.

Also worn by Esther Williams is a bright yellow period jumper from “Take Me Out to the Ball Game” MGM 1949. This sleeveless chartreuse dress with floral-pattern trim is worn by Williams in this very entertaining 1949 musical romance and can be seen in one of the musical numbers in the film with Gene Kelly and Frank Sinatra.

The costume also appears heavily in production stills for the release of the film. Helen Rose also designed the costumes for this feature.

MARLON BRANDO WORLDS GREATEST ACTOR

Here is a period frock coat and vest worn by Marlon Brando in his portrayal of Napoleon Bonaparte in the 1954 Fox film “Desiree”.

Brando who has been referred to as perhaps the worlds greatest performer, is also known for his role as Stanley Kowalski in “A Streetcar Named Desire” and his Academy Award performance as Terry Malloy in “On the Waterfront”.

He is of course also remembered for his role as Vito Corleone in “The Godfather”.

Costumes for the film Desiree were designed by Rene Hubert. The film also starred the wonderful Jean Simmons and Merle Oberon.

Also from Desiree is this beautiful period wool gown of royal blue and purple with long train. Jean Simmons played the title role of Desiree as the love interest of Napoleon. Costumes again designed by Rene Hubert. This was a lavish production for 20th Century Fox studios and no expense was spared in this historical epic.

JULIE ANDREWS STAR!

Everyone’s favourite Maria and Mary Poppins, Julie Andrews portrayed the life of English theatre and musical star Gertrude Lawrence in the 1968 20th Century Fox film “Star!”

The film has a memorable soundtrack highlighting the days of English vaudeville of which Julie Andrews herself was a part of early in her career.

This World War 1 tan-coloured raw silk military ensemble with a fitted jacket and jodhpur pants was worn by Julie Andrews as she portrayed 'Gertrude Lawrence' in the comedy musical number 'Oh! It's a Lovely War'. Andrews is seen ruining the number for all the other chorus girls. Designer Donald Brooks was nominated for an Academy Award for 'Best Costume Design' for his work in this film.

Jane Wyman was a wonderful character actress in film.

Best known for her films of the 1930s and 40’s, she received an Academy Award for Best Actress for her performance in “Johnny Belinda” in 1948. Other film classics include “Magnificent Obsession” and “All that Hevean Allows”.

Here is a beautiful ball gown of pink silk and lace with heavily detailed beading at the bodice designed by the legendary Edith Head. Jane Wyman wore this gown in the 1951 Paramount film “Here Comes the Groom”. Wyman starred opposite Bing Crosby in this musical comedy.

Jane Wyman was also remembered as being the first wife of Ronald Reagan and of course matriarch Angela Channing in the long running soap opera “Falcon Crest”.

RHONDA FLEMING QUEEN OF TECHNICOLOR

Rhonda Fleming is considered one of the most beautiful and glamorous actresses of the 40's and 50's cinema and was nicknamed the "Queen of Technicolor" based on her red hair photographing well in Technicolor.

This is a period gown worn by Rhonda Fleming in the 1949 Paramount musical "A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court".

Costumes were designed by Edith Head. Fleming co-starred with Bing Crosby in this her first Technicolor film. The story of the flim is based on the Mark Twain classic.

Fleming is also known for her roles in films such as "Spellbound" 1945 for Alfred Hitchcock and "The Spiral Staircase" in 1946 for Robert Siodmak. Fleming also appread in the film noir classic "Out of the Past" in 1947.

ELIZABETH TAYLOR ALWAYS THE STAR

Dame Elizabeth Taylor was born Hampstead, London. Moving to the US in 1939, she was discovered at an early age and signed her first film contract with Universal Pictures in 1941.

Moving to MGM in 1942, she appeared in “Lassie Come Home”. Loaned to Fox studios, Taylor also appeared in “Jane Eyre” in 1944.

For MGM however, Taylor has been involved in some of the most memorable productions the studio has ever produced including “National Velvet”, “Father of the Bride”, “Raintree County”, “Little Women” and “Cat On A Hot Tin Roof”.

This elegant suit was worn by Elizabeth Taylor in the sequel to “Father of the Bride” being “Father's Little Dividend” in 1951. The film starred Spencer Tracy.

The Yellow two piece suit is decorated with lace trim to the collar and bodice. The costume was designed by Helen Rose.

The gown appears in the Christening scenes in the film.

This second gown was worn by Elizabeth Taylor in 1954 for the film “Beau Brummell” . This period film tells the story of Beau Brummell, played by Stewart Granger who trades a military career for looking good after he insults the Crown Prince. Peter Ustinov plays The Prince of Wales in the film. Taylor portrayed the character of Lady Patricia. Costumes were designed by Elizabeth Haffenden.

This pale blue silk period gown was worn by Elizabeth Taylor with a gauze overlay, fitted bodice with back eyelet closure and a sash, ruffled short sleeves, and a full skirt embroidered with delicate silver bullion and rhinestones. There is a handwritten Western Costume Co label inscribed E. Taylor and a handwritten B.J. Simmons & Co. label inscribed Miss E. Taylor.

The gown is seen in key sequences in the film.

Taylor can also be seen here in costume between takes. With her is her co-star Stewart Granger and husband Michael Wilding.

Taylor appeared in Giant in 1956. Following which she was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress in the film ‘Raintree County’ in 1957 opposite Montgomery Clift. An attempt by MGM to make a sequel to “Gone With The Wind”, this American Civil War epic tells the story of love between characters played by Montgomery Clift and Eva Marie Saint and Clift then entering into a passionate, yet loveless, marriage with a woman named Susanna Drake played by Elizabeth Taylor. It is later discovered that Taylor character’s mother died in an asylum and it becomes apparent that Susanna has inherited her family's illness. The film is set against the backdrop of the civil war.

Here is a full-length gown designed by Walter Plunkett and worn by Elizabeth Taylor in the film. The bodice of mauve taffeta with full sleeves of layers of tulle embroidered with mauve flower heads, the full-length skirt of ivory cotton embroidered all over with mauve flower heads, with corresponding layered underskirt; and a parasol -- made for Elizabeth Taylor as Susanna Drake in the 1957 M.G.M. film Raintree County.

Also in the photo is the original corresponding costume design by Walter Plunkett, graphite and watercolour on card, signed by Walter Plunkett, the reverse with production ink-stamps and production details inscribed in pencil.

The costume appeared on a location shoot for the film at the famous Windsor ruins in Mississippi.

GRACE KELLY AMERICAN PRINCESS

This is a period gown worn by actress Grace Kelly in the 1956 MGM film “The Swan”.

The film was one of the last in production for MGM with Grace Kelly before she left Hollywood to become Princess Grace of Monaco. The film tells the story of the daughter of a minor European royal house who is being considered as a wife for her cousin, the heir to the throne. The film’s theme was rather prophetic and mirrored what was to occur in real life. In fact MGM held the release of the film to correspond with the wedding day of Grace Kelly to Prince Rainier of Monaco.

The costumes for the film were designed by Helen Rose. The costume consists of an embroidered cream blouse with a silk dress overlay decorated with a floral motif.

Grace Kelly is seen here on the set of ‘The Swan” and between takes in the costume.

The silk blouse was also seen on the cover of Screen Stories Magazine.

Grace Kelly as an actress was keen to involve herself in the workings of film and especially with costume. Kelly worked closely with the designers to ensure the accuracy of the costume for the period and the look of the film.

In the 1970’s the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, held a retrospective of film costume. Kelly who visited the exhibition commented on the costumes that were on display from “The Swan” The gowns had been paired with shoes and parasol’s that were not original to the costume or in fact looked appropriate for the costume. Kelly commented on this aspect of the exhibition. Her awareness of film costume and what was correct never left her.

Grace Kelly enjoyed working with Helen Rose in many of her films as well as in her private and public life. In fact Helen Rose went on to design one of the most famous wedding gowns ever for Ms Kelly with her marriage to Prince Rainier.

The fate of the Olympic-class passenger liner Titanic has been the subject of a number of films and mini series. The first of these films was made in 1929. The most recent, being James Cameron’s epic in 1997.

This is a gown worn by Barbara Stanwyck in the 1953 20th Centry Fox version of the film directed by Jean Negulesco. Starring opposite Clifton Webb and a young Robert Wagner, the costumes for the film were designed by Dorothy Jeakins.

This gown was worn by Thelma Ritter in the same film version. Ritter played the character of Maude Young which was in effect the Unsinkable Molly Brown.

From the 1997 James Cameron film, this hat was worn by Kathy Bates in her portrayal of Molly Brown. Many of the costumes were in them period pieces from the era. This hat was made in the early 1900’s and altered as required for use in the film. The hat appears in the first lunch scene on the Titanic.

GREER GARSON ENGLISH ROSE

British Born Greer Garson was a major MGM star in the 40’s and 50’s and was discovered by MGM head Louis B. Mayer on the London stage. Mayer offered Garson a contract with MGM.

At MGM Garson starred in memorable film classics including “Goodbye, Mr. Chips”. Garson was nominated for an Oscar for her role.

Garson also appeared in other memorable films including “Pride and Prejudice” , “Mrs Miniver”, “Mrs Parkington” and “Marie Curie” .

Here is a period gown worn by Greer Garson in the 1951 MGM film “Law and the Lady” Starring opposite Michael Wilding and Fernando Lamas, Garson plays a housemaid turned thief and con artist. This comedy was the third remake of this famous stage play and Garsons role had previously been portrayed by both Norma Shearer and Joan Crawford.

Costumes for the film were designed by Walter Plunkett. Plunkett who also designed for “Gone With The Wind” in 1939 called upon a previous design he used in that film, namely the famous green dress that Scarlett O’Hara has made out of curtains. In this film, Garson discusses having made her gown out of the curtains, which hung in her now ex employer’s drawing room. Plunkett makes wonderful use of the curtain tassel on the gown as part of the design of he costume.

The costume appears in a very charming scene between both Wilding and Lamas.

The gown also gives an insight into the colours and fabrics used by the MGM costume creators in order for the costumes to appear and to film well on black and white film stock. The rust coloured silk provides a striking comparison to the white panels, which appears beautifully on screen.

Garson remains one of the most popular actresses of the 40’s and continues to remain for many a much loved and adored film star.

JUDY GARLAND FOREVER A STAR

Here is a wonderful ensemble worn by Judy Garland in the MGM musical "Easter Parade" in 1948.

Easter Parade is considered one of the best of the MGM musicals of the 40's with a great cast and memorable songs from Irving Berlin.

Judy Garland wears this desgin in the "Fella with An Umbrella" sequence and leading into the "I Love a Piano" medley.

The costume consists of a red panelled skirt with dart ends and a black form fitting jacket.

Costuems were dsigned by Irene.

In an intervew with Judy Garland, she provided her recollections of filming the "Fella with an Umbrella", sequence which was filmed on the backlot during a rain sequence. Judy recalls "I was wearing a red skirt, a black jacket and a little black Scottish hat with a red plume. At the

very end of the number, all I had to do was turn and do a sort of lovely look at Peter. Suddenly, everyone yelled 'Cut!'; I thought 'What have I done?' Well, it turned out the dye off the red feather ran all over my face and the back of my jacket; it looked like there was just blood

everywhere. So then they had to reset and get more rain. And they couldn't figure out what to do with this bloody feather - so they put Vaseline on it! Which I thought was kind of unattractive!"

A wonderful piece of both Garland and MGM history.

Garland can be seen wearing the cosutme in various production shots from the film including clowning around with Peter Lawford on the set.

The costume was also used in a Garland exhibition in New York City some years ago. Featured also were costumes worn in "Summer Stock" and "In The Good Old Summertime".

These boots form part of the few remaining pieces of costume made for Judy Garland to be worn in her role as Annie Oakley in "Annie Get Your Gun" for MGM in 1950. Judy Garland was replaced in the production by Betty Hutton as a result of ongoing health problems.

Whilst Judy Garland sadly never completed the production, there remains a complete recording of the musical numbers from the film as well as the filming of two production numbers including "Im an Indian". Production photos including costume tests have also survived.

The boots are worn by Judy Garland in this costume test from the film. Costumes were desgined by Helen Rose and Walter Plunkett. A great association piece from a true legend.

JANE POWELL THE GIRL NEXT DOOR

This beautiful pink and beige lace formal gown, worn by Powell in her starring role as Polly Bradford in the 1948 comedy musical Luxury Liner. Designed by Helen Rose, this gown features a pink floral pattern along the beige lace and pink fabric wrap.

Jane Powell became a child at MGM as a teenager working in films opposite stars including Fred Astaire, Elizabeth Taylor and Howard Keel. Powell made many memorable films for MGM including Royal Wedding, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers.

JANE RUSSELL MOVIE GODDESS

Here is a beautiful full length sequinned evening gown worn by Jane Russell in the film “The Revolt of Mamie Stover”. The film was made at 20th Century Fox studios in 1956.

Capturing the essence of one of the sexiest women to grace the silver screen, the gown was designed for ms Russell by Bill Travilla who designed for many of her films and for another film great Marilyn Monroe.

Russell in the film plays a Mississippi prostitute and later a war profiteer. The film was directed by Raoul Walsh.

Jane Russell has starred in many memorable roles including “The Outlaw” in 1943 and of course “Gentleman Prefer Blondes”. A great piece of Hollywood glamour from the 50's.

DEBBIE REYNOLDS TELL ME TRUE

This is a Debbie Reynolds dance costume worn by her in the MGM musical "Give a Girl A Break". The gown was designed by the wonderful Helen Rose in 1953. The dance costume consist of a yellow chiffon top and cream chiffon skirt with multiple ruffled layers of underskirt.

The gown is used in a wonderful dance sequence with the legendary dancer and choreographer Bob Fossee. The production number was unique in that it was filed in reverse to allow Reynolds and Fosse the opportunity to look like they were un- popping balloons during the dance sequence. They look amazing in this sequence directed by Stanley Donen and choreography by Gower Champion. A great piece of MGM musical History.

Ms Reynolds in her own right should be noted as a prolific collector and preserver of Hollywood history and has managed to collect some wonderful treasures not only from her days at MGM but from every major studio. A great lady and a wonderful collector. I had the pleasure of meeting her once on her tour and talking ever so briefly in relation to costumes and collecting. I wish it could have been longer!

BETTY GRABLE THE GIRL WITH THE MILLION DOLLAR LEGS

Here is a showgirl costume worn by actress and pin-up girl Betty Grable, also known as "The Girl With the Million Dollar Legs." This costume was worn in the 1955 musical "Three for the Show." It was to be Grable's next-to-last film role.

Costumes for Grable were designed by Jean Louis.

The musical tells the story of singing-and-dancing stage star Julie (Betty Grable) who assumes that her husband Marty (Jack Lemmon) is missing in action during WWII and presumed dead. Grable is engaged to new love Vernon (Gower Champion), when Lemmon returns.

The costume was used in the Poster art for the film and is constructed of a leotard covered in thousand of bugle beads and sequins in a harlequin design.

The costume can be seen in the opening scenes during the opening credits and first song. The costume came from the collection of child star and collector Jane Withers.

CALL ME ETHEL MERMAN

Here is a stunning gown worn by Ethel Merman in “Call Me Madam” 20th Century Fox pictures in 1953 when she portrayed the hostess with the mostest “Sally Adams.

Merman portrayed the role on Broadway opening in October 1950 where it ran for 644 performances. When the musical was adapted for film in 1953, Merman was offered the role. Costumes for both the Broadway and film version were designed by Irene Sharaff.

The gown is silver patterned strapless evening gown with a jeweled bodice. The dress also comes with a very long rear train. If you know the film, the dress itself plays an integral part to the scene Merman also sings one of the hits from the film whilst wearing this gown, “The International Rag” by Irving Berlin.

ANN MILLER DANCE GODESS

This is a gown worn by Ann Miller in the 1949 MGM musical “On The Town”. Costumes were designed by Helen Rose. Thew gown of shocking pink grosgrain embroidered on the front with black beads and sequins in a floral motif, with studio production label inside inscribed Ann Miller made for Ann Miller as Claire Huddesen in the 1949 film On The Town.

On the Town is considered to be one was MGM's brightest and best films of the post-WWII era. The film symbolizes the optimistic view of the future that was widely held in the U.S. in 1949.

The film tells the story of three sailors ( Frank Sinatra, Gene Kelly and Jules Munshin) on shore leave and have 24 hours to see New York City.

The film, based on the staged Broadway musical hit of 1944 has music by Leonard Bernstein and Roger Edens and book and lyrics by Betty Comden and Adolph Green. The film has many well known hits and is remembered as one of the best films produced by MGM' and the Arthur Freed unit.

The film was directed by Gene Kelly and Stanley Donen. The film is also remembered for its combination of studio and location filming, when director, Kelly insisted that some scenes be shot in New York City itself, including at the American Museum of Natural History, the Brooklyn Bridge, and Rockefeller Center.

The movie was an instant success and won the Academy Award for Best Music, Scoring of a Musical Picture, and was nominated for a Golden Globe Award for Best Cinematography.

In 2006 the film ranked number 19 on the American Film Institute's list of best musicals.

Ann Miller starred in over forty motion pictures and Broadway shows and is best known for her tap dancing since her earliest childhood days.

When Ann Miller was signed on by MGM , from the late forties to the mid fifties, she starred in some of MGM's most spectacular musical productions. These memorable musicals included "Easter Parade" which featured her dancing with Fred Astaire and "On The Town" with Gene Kelly.

FOREVER LINDA DARNELL

Forever Amber" was the film version of the 1944 novel. The film was made in 1947 by 20th Century Fox pictures and starred Linda Darnell, George Sanders, and Jessica Tandy.

The role originally went to Peggy Cummings. When it was thought that she was too inexperienced to play the role, she was replaced by Linda Darnell. Darnell was also required to changed her hair colour to red for the role.

This detailed period gown was made for and worn by Linda Darnell as Amber St. Clair and appears in key scenes in the film including the ball and fire scene.

The costume also comes with the original Marabou trim headpiece. With the sale of costumes by the studios and subsequent destruction of pieces. It is rare to see accessories such as shoes,belts,hats and other similar pieces remaining with costumes. For the most part, storage at the studios was based on item type and that therefore hats and shoes would have been stored somewhere other than where the gowns were stored. Costumes were also re used in later production and altered for other use. Some alterations were minor however many changed the costume in some cases making them unrecognisable from their original use which sometimes was the point. Collectors of today work to restore these treasures to their original film appearance.

Darnell is remembered for her roles a Fox studios including "Unfaithfully Yours"(1948) and "A Letter to Three Wives" (1949). Other equally famous films include "The Mark of Zorro" and "Blood and Sand".

A smoker, Darnell died in 1965, at age 41, from burns received in a house fire. It has been said that Darnell fell asleep whilst holding a lit cigarette although there is no evidence to support this. A tragic end to a great Hollywood beauty and actress.

LANA TURNER THE SWEATER GIRL

Legend has it that Lana Turner was discovered in Schwab's Drugstore. In fact she was discovered at the Top Hat Cafe. Nicknamed "The Sweater Girl", Lana Turner reached the height of her success at the MGM studios during the 1940's and 1950's. Best remembered for her roles in films such as "The Postman Always Rings Twice", "The Bad and the Beautiful" and "Peyton Place", Lana Turner became the popular pin up girl for the GIs in World War II.

Here is a cream satin wedding gown worn by Lana Turner as Marianne Patourel in the 1947 MGM film "Green Dolphin Street". Based on the Sebastian Falks novel of the same name, Green Dolphin Street tells the story of two sisters and their love for the one man. The gown was designed by Walter Plunkett. Plunkett who favoured the military style in many of his designs, used tassle and braiding on this costume to represent the military theme of the wedding.

This costume was also displayed in the now legendary Diana Vreeland exhibition of film costume at the Metropolitan Museum of Modern Art in New York. The exhibition "Hollywood Design" took place in 1974.

This second Lana Turner costume, also designed by Walter Plunkett is from the 1956 MGM film "Diane" in which Turner portrayed Diane de Poitiers, the Countess de Breze.

This costume is worn in a fencing scene opposite a very young Roger Moore. The gown is comprised of a quilted black skirt with black satin overlay and silver bullion design to the shoulders and bodice.

CLAUDETTE COLBERT QUEEN OF THE NILE

Throughout the history of Hollywood, the love story of Cleopatra and Mark Anthony has been told numerous times on film and with some 14 productions over the years.

There have been three famous film versions. The first being the original 1917 silent production with "the vamp" Theda Bara. There is no surviving print of this film apart from a few short seconds of a dancing Bara which is attributed to the film. Many stills however have survived of this film to give a good understanding of the costumes made for the film. The other famous version is the 1963 20th Century Fox version with Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton. In between was the Cecil B Demille Paramount pictures version of 1934.

Claudette Colbert portrayed the Queen of the Nile in 1934. Colbert appeared in popular films including "Imitation of Life" and Frank Capra's "It Happened One Night" being the same year as Cleopatra. She is considered one of the strongest character portrayals of Cleopatra.

This black and white gown was worn by Claudette Colbert in the 1934 Cecil B Demille version of "Cleopatra" made at Paramount studios. The costumes were designed by Travis Banton.

The gown consists of a layered effect of black crepe fabric to resemble snake scales. The sheer bodice is decorated with eagles on each of the breasts. The production was made in pre code Hollywood before the Hayes office, the film industries voice of human decency at the time, introduced rules for what could and could not be seen on the screen. The costumes in this film, like those in "The Sign of the Cross" also directed by Demille in 1932, are shocking at times even for today's standards. Likewise the script.

The costumes designed by Banton were very much based on the art deco style which was popular at the time. Commentators have considered that many of the gowns worn by Colbert in the film would have been considered equally appropriate at any 1930's Hollywood party.

The film has recently been re released in a remastered print and looks amazing.

I had the pleasure of meeting this great lady many years ago during her tour in a play in 1985. A wonderful actress with lots of class!

BARBRA STREISAND HELLO GORGEOUS!

Barbra Streisand wore this two piece red velvet gown with fox fur trim worn in her portrayal of Fanny Brice in the 1968 film musical version of the role she created on Broadway. “Funny Girl” is considered a movie musical classic and Streisand won great acclaim with the transfer of her role from stage to screen. The costumes were designed for the film by Irene Sharaff.

MAUREEN O'HARA THE RED-HEADED IRISH BEAUTY

Thanks to her red hair, beautiful eyes and the magicians of the Technicolor process, Maureen O'Hara became known as The Queen of Technicolor. Best remembered in her roles as the heroine in costume epics, she has appeared in many film classics including 'How Green Was My Valley" and 'The Quiet Man".

The following are some costume pieces from her career.

This brown two piece riding suit was worn by Ms O'Hara in the opening scenes of the 1949 Universal Pictures film "Baghdad". The film tells the story of a Princess in search of her fathers' murder. The costumes were designer by Yvonne Wood.

From the same film, is a green satin gown with tassel trim as worn by Ms O'Hara.

Ms O'Hara wears this costume in the 1945 RKO classic "The Spanish Main". An entertaining swashbuckling story, she starred opposite Paul Henreid. Ms O'Hara's costumes were designer by Edward Stevenson. This is a cream lace nightgown with lace up to the front.

I am a great admirer of this wonderful actress not only for her amazing talent but for her many contributions to the motion picture industry. An extraordinary and remarkable woman. If you get the chance, you must read her 2005 autobiography "Tis Herslef".

THE PRINCE AND THE PAUPER WARNER BROS CLASSIC

This Mark Twain story classic tells the story of two look a like children, one a Royal Prince and one a street urchin who exchange places in order to see how the other half lives. The most popular of the versions made for film was produced by Warner Bros in 1937.

The film starred Errol Flynn and Claude Rains and the Mauch twins Billy Mauch and Robert (Bobby) Mauch as the look a like children. The two were reported to have had a lot of fun on the set exchanging roles and costumes to the confusion of all.

Costumes were designed by Milo Anderson.

The first garment is a period red wine velvet coat with white fur trim worn by Billy Mauch.

The second piece is teal brocade sleeveless over-cape trimmed with gray squirrel, bearing an interior "Western Costume" label.

KATHARINE HEPBURN CLASSIC ELEGANCE

This is a costume pieces from the very early part of Hepburn's career.

This is a Katharine Hepburn screen worn period gown from "A Woman Rebel's" (RKO 1936). This is truly a remarkable piece of vintage Hollywood history. A purple and pink two piece polka dot period gown worn by the legendary Hepburn in one of her earliest RKO films.
Hepburn portrayed Pamela Thistlewaite, a woman who rebels against the social traditions of Victorian England in the late 1800's. Hepburn's performance as the defiant young woman has been considered the personification of her feminist characterizations of the 1930s. Costumes were designed by the legendary Walter Plunkett who formed a long lasting relationship with Hepburn and designed for many of her RKO films including the classic Little Women. The blouse fastens to the front with hook eye closures. The full length skirt is decorated at the hem with multiple fabric layers to create an intricate pattered design and is highlighted by multiple rows of hand covered buttons which are evident on the entire lower portion of the costume.

The items carries a sewn in label with the handwritten notation "HEPBURN C- 1557"

Costumes of Hepburn's early career are highly sought after.
